I've always been one to remain friendly, or at least civil, with my exes. Now I wasn't particularly popular throughout school and did not date the captain of the high school football team, but I had a few boyfriends that lasted for a [very] brief time. On the other hand, many of the breakups or relationships were somewhat awkward.
Lately, I seem to be running into my past head-on. Here are just a few of my experiences:
1) While browsing through the aisles of Target on a slow day, I run into my ex-boyfriend from sophomore year of high school while he is with his new fiancé. I dated him in high school because he was friends with my best friend's boyfriend. He was a jerk, at least at the time. So after we had broken up, my best friend decided it would be a good idea to date him sometime during senior year. (Miraculously, we are still best friends and enjoy a laugh or two about it!)
2) My gym is typically where I consider a safe place... you know, where I can let my hair down, avoid all traces of makeup, and sweat without judgment. It is not the best place to try and prove that you're better off when an ex-boyfriend is employed by said gym. To my surprise, I walk in one day to recognize my ex-boyfriend from my senior year sitting at the trainer's desk. This boyfriend was also not the most polite "adolescent" boy back then. I overheard his friends talking about me on speakerphone and he didn't even care. Needless to say, that relationship wasn't going anywhere. So I walk into the gym and make a beeline straight for the women's area thinking I could find safety. Nope. In he walks to do a personal training session with someone. It's hard to show that you're so much better when you're covered in sweat and wearing sweatpants that are a few years old. Now, I try to avoid seeing him and walk the other way.
3) And yet another gym story. This time it is my ex-boyfriend from 8th grade. While this may not seem like anything to most people, this was also the first boyfriend to tell me he loved me (in French, no less). It is also the same boyfriend that I broke up with on our 8th grade trip to Disneyland. My friend was the one that urged me to do so and she ended up getting together with him that same day... go figure. He now works out at my gym. So much for enjoying my Tuesday night yoga class.
4) The ex-husband... this isn't really any surprise. We live fairly close now and will live slightly farther away from each other when we move, but we are pretty good friends and it's the least awkward ex-relationship I have. We communicate regularly and get along just fine.
5) Last, but not least, I live with my parents and they are moving into a new house at the end of the month. I also found out via Facebook, that my ex-boyfriend from a couple years ago is moving into the house that ours faces. I am still on friendly terms with this ex. (We broke up because I am fairly independent and wanted to invest my free time in my daughter and my family instead of entertaining a boyfriend)... so now I will eventually have to have the awkward encounter of running into my ex-boyfriend and his fiancé in our new neighborhood.... Hello, block parties!
Maybe one day I'll be able to just avoid all awkward encounters, but that is highly doubtful. I sort of live for awkward moments, so why not make a joke of them?
